A functional health coach in Northern Utah.

What a functional health coach actually does.
A functional health coach looks at the patterns behind how you feel (sleep, blood sugar, stress, food, movement), builds daily habits around your own numbers, and checks in every week so the plan gets followed. A coach educates and keeps you on track. Your doctor diagnoses and treats.
That is a different job from your physician’s. A typical doctor visit is short and has to cover a lot of ground. A coach gets an hour, then a weekly check-in, and can sit in the details of your actual week: what you ate on Tuesday, how you slept, why 3pm keeps going sideways.
The word “functional” just means we start with the underlying pattern instead of the loudest symptom. Weight is rarely a weight problem. It is usually a sleep problem, a glucose problem, a stress problem, or all three at once. Pull the right lever first and the rest start to move.
Adults in Northern Utah who have tried the usual things.
You are not lazy and you are not looking for a shortcut. You have read a lot and tried a few diets. You want a plan built on you, and a person who will actually check whether it is working. I see clients from across Weber and Davis counties, and they usually sound like one of these:
- Real weight to lose, and tired of losing the same twenty pounds twice.
- A doctor who said “prediabetic” or “watch your A1C,” and no clear next step.
- On a GLP-1 and worried about losing muscle along with the fat.
- Energy that crashes every afternoon, sleep that does not restore you.
- Over 50 and wanting to feel strong again, not just lighter.
- Labs in hand and no idea what they are actually saying.
What we work on together.
Everything affects everything else, so we never work one lever at a time. We start where your body is, and usually with sleep and stress, because they make the rest easier.
Sleep, stress and habits
These usually matter more than any workout plan, so we start here. Sleep changes what you eat, what you eat changes your glucose, and your glucose changes your energy and your decisions.
Metabolic health and blood sugar
Glucose spikes, insulin resistance, food order, the post-meal walk. If you have a CGM or recent labs we read your patterns together. If not, we start with how you feel after meals. The hour or two after a meal is where most of the work is.
Weight loss that holds
Your protein, calories and macros, worked out from your goal weight and your real schedule. Then the habits that survive a hard week, because that is the week that matters. No bootcamp.
Protein, muscle and strength
Enough protein, every day, so more of the weight you lose is fat and not muscle. Strength training comes in when your body is ready for it, not on day one. This matters more the older you get.
Support while on a GLP-1
If your doctor has prescribed semaglutide or tirzepatide, I coach the food and habit side: protein to protect muscle while your appetite is low, strength work, and eating habits that hold if your dose changes or ends. I do not prescribe or adjust medication. That stays with your prescriber.
Your labs, in plain English
What your bloodwork suggests, which markers are worth asking your doctor about next, and what to watch over time. Education, not diagnosis. Clinical interpretation stays with your physician.
Consult, then a plan, then someone checking in.
Most people start with the consult. Some find it is all they needed.
-
The consult $149, one hour
One unhurried hour at my Washington Terrace office, or by phone or Zoom. You leave with the Doman Health Wellness Guide and your first two or three steps, in order. No commitment past that.
-
Your plan built on your numbers
Protein, calories and macros set from your goal weight and your actual life. Food order and timing. Sleep first, then movement, then strength. A plan you understand well enough to adjust yourself. Here is why exercise comes later in the order, not first.
-
Ongoing coaching $199 a month
A weekly check-in, one on one, plus you can text me anytime in between. The plan keeps updating as your body changes. Month to month, cancel any time. Everything coaching includes.
The whole idea, in under a minute.
What a first consult looks like.
You request it on the consult page, I send you a booking link with a short intake, and you pick a time. Here is what you walk away with:
- The real constraint. How your weight, energy, sleep, stress and training are pulling on each other.
- A first-step plan, in order. The two or three things worth doing first, sequenced so each makes the next easier.
- Your bloodwork, read with you. If you brought labs. If not, which ones are worth asking your doctor for.
- The Wellness Guide on your phone. Your protein and calorie targets, a label checker and 70+ food swaps.
- A straight answer on coaching. If ongoing support makes sense, I will say so. If it does not, I will say that too.
Washington Terrace, serving Weber and Davis counties.
My office is in Washington Terrace, Utah, just south of Ogden, so Ogden, South Ogden, Riverdale, Roy and Uintah are a short drive, and North Ogden is not much more. From Davis County, South Weber is next door, Layton and Clearfield are about twenty minutes, and Kaysville, Syracuse, Farmington and Bountiful are a little farther.
Meeting in person is the best way to do the first hour. If you are farther out, in Logan, Brigham City, Salt Lake City or anywhere else in Utah, the consult works by phone or Zoom. Ongoing coaching is remote for everyone, so where you live is not a constraint.

Before I coached it, I lived it.
I had been overweight since I was a teenager. I peaked at 280 pounds eating what any reasonable person would call a healthy diet. In 2023 I was diagnosed with cancer. In the years since, I rebuilt my health through food, sleep, movement, rest and measurement. I wore a continuous glucose monitor for six straight months and logged every meal. Foods I had believed in for years were spiking my blood sugar hour after hour. Nearly 100 pounds later, I feel better at forty-one than I did at twenty-two.
I grew up inside this idea. My father, Bob Doman, founded the National Association for Child Development in 1979 on the principle that you measure the individual and build the program around them. I still run NACD’s operations today. Doman Health is that same idea, pointed at an adult. The longer version of the story is here.
I am not a doctor. I do not diagnose, treat or prescribe. When something belongs in front of a physician, I will say so and point you to one.
What health coaching is not.
It is not medical care. Coaching is education and accountability. It does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and it does not replace your doctor.
It is not a template. There is no PDF meal plan and no app deciding your dinner. The plan is built on your numbers and it changes as you do.
It is not a promise. Results vary by person. What I can promise is a plan you understand, a weekly check-in, and straight answers.
In their own words.

Health coaching in Northern Utah, answered.
How much does health coaching cost in Northern Utah?
$149 for the first consult and $199 a month for ongoing coaching at Doman Health. The consult is one hour, one on one, and includes the Doman Health Wellness Guide. Coaching includes weekly check-ins and text access in between, month to month, so you can stop any time. If a friend gave you a referral code, enter it when you book.
Does insurance cover health coaching?
Usually not. Health coaching is not a medical service, so most insurance plans do not cover it, and Doman Health does not bill insurance. HSA and FSA rules for coaching are narrow and depend on your plan, so check with your plan administrator before you count on it.
What is the difference between a health coach, a dietitian, and a functional medicine doctor?
A doctor diagnoses and prescribes, a dietitian provides medical nutrition therapy, and a health coach helps you build habits and keep them. A functional medicine doctor is a licensed physician who can order labs and prescribe. A registered dietitian is a licensed nutrition professional, often covered by insurance for certain conditions. A health coach is neither, and many people use one alongside their doctor or dietitian, not instead of them.
Do I need labs before I start?
No. If you have recent bloodwork, bring it and we will read it together in plain English. If you do not, we start from where you are, and Laird can tell you which labs are worth asking your doctor about. Ordering and interpreting labs clinically stays with your physician.
Can you help while I am on a GLP-1 like semaglutide or tirzepatide?
Yes, with the food and habit side, alongside your prescriber. Laird does not prescribe, recommend or adjust medication. He helps with getting enough protein to protect muscle while your appetite is low, strength training so more of what you lose is fat, and eating habits that hold if your dose changes or ends.
Can we meet virtually instead of in person?
Yes. The consult works by phone or Zoom, and ongoing coaching is remote for everyone. In person at the Washington Terrace office is the best way to do the first hour if you can make it. Clients outside Utah are welcome too.
How long until I see results?
It varies by person, and no one can honestly promise you a number. Most people give coaching about 12 weeks to see it compound, which is a suggested arc, not a contract. Sleep and stress are usually the first things we work on, so they are often the first changes people notice.
Is health coaching medical care?
No. Laird Doman is a health coach, not a physician. Coaching is education and accountability. It does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and it does not replace your relationship with your doctor. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or take prescription medication, your doctor leads and coaching supports.
