About Laird
Before I coached it, I lived it.
Overweight since I was a teenager. A cancer diagnosis at thirty-eight. Then the rebuild: food, sleep, movement, measurement, and a lot of small decisions stacked in the right order, fast. Nearly 100 pounds gone, and I feel better than I did at 22. This page is the honest version of how.
My peak, and today.
On a continuous glucose monitor, every meal logged.
Of Doman family work on the individual.
Growing up Doman
My father, Bob Doman, founded the National Association for Child Development in 1979. I was on NACD programs from infancy and grew up traveling with him to evaluations across the country, watching families who had been handed averages everywhere else get a program built for the one child in front of him. My grandfather, Dr. Robert Doman Sr., was Medical Director of the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential. The idea I absorbed before I could name it: measure the individual, build the program around them, adapt it as they change. I still run NACD’s operations today.
The heavy years
Knowing all of that did not keep me thin. I have been overweight since I was a teenager, and I tried everything a reasonable person tries. I built and ran businesses, wore every hat, and ate what any reasonable person would call a healthy diet. I peaked at 280 pounds. I was not hiding it. I just did not know yet.
The diagnosis, and the choice
In 2023 I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a family and two little kids to stay healthy for, and a body that had not responded to anything less than extreme. I chose a path that did not include chemotherapy, radiation, or traditional cancer drugs. I wrote myself an eleven-page protocol before I started, so I would not be standing in the kitchen at 6pm making decisions I was too tired to make well. Then I followed it.
Would I rather skip the bread, or have my tongue and teeth taken out of my face if it came back? Framed that way, the small decisions stopped being small.
What the glucose monitor taught me
I wore a continuous glucose monitor for six straight months and logged every meal. Foods I had believed in for years were spiking my blood sugar hour after hour, silently, every day. I was never diabetic, but I was sliding toward it. That feedback loop, more than any single diet, is what pulled my body back into homeostasis. It is also where the method comes from: measure the actual person, not the average. The same thing my father has done for forty-five years, pointed at an adult.
What changed, and how fast
Sleep changed what I ate. What I ate changed my glucose. My glucose changed my energy, my mood, and whether my body would let go of weight at all. Once the order was right, the weight came off faster than anything I had tried in twenty years. Three years on I am fit, healthy, and cancer-free, a hundred pounds lighter, and I feel better at forty-one than I did at twenty-two. It is a lot of small decisions. It is not slow.
Day to day
Water fasting, with a daily eating window and a longer fast most weeks. Strength training. The walk after meals. Sauna, cold plunge, red light. Pickleball, badly and often. A lot of reading, and a lot of using AI to run my own plan, check my own assumptions, and keep every lab, meal, and night of sleep in one place I can actually search.
What I believe
Everything affects everything else, so a plan built on a single lever stalls. The order you pull the levers in decides how fast anything changes. And you are not an average, so the plan has to be built on you. That is what I do with clients, and it is why the first thing I ask for is your whole picture, not your goal weight.
Home
My wife and I live in South Weber, Utah, with our two kids, which is most of the reason I take this seriously. The office is in the Ogden area; coaching is remote, so where you are is not a constraint. I am a functional health coach, not a doctor. I do not diagnose, treat, or prescribe, and when something belongs in front of a physician, I will say so and point you to one.
