5 Things AI Says About Your Business Right Now
(And Why It Matters)

By Laird Doman · April 2026 · 7 min read

We asked four AI platforms — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity — about real businesses. What they said was eye-opening.

Some businesses showed up perfectly. Most didn't. And the gaps between "visible" and "invisible" came down to five specific things that almost every business owner can fix — once they know about them.

Here's what we found.

1. It Probably Doesn't Know You Exist

This is the most common result, and the most alarming. We asked AI about dozens of small businesses and, more often than not, the response was some version of: "I don't have specific information about that business."

Think about what that means. A potential customer asks their AI assistant for a recommendation in your industry, in your city, and your name never comes up. Not because you're bad — because AI simply doesn't have enough data about you to mention you.

Meanwhile, 75% of AI users trust the first answer they get and don't dig further. If you're not in that answer, you lost the customer before you ever had a chance.

2. When It Does, It Gets the Details Wrong

This might be worse than being invisible. Some businesses show up in AI results — but with the wrong address, outdated hours, services they don't offer, or prices from three years ago.

AI builds its answers from whatever it can find online. If your information is scattered across old directories, outdated Yelp listings, and a website you haven't updated since 2022, AI will piece together a Frankenstein version of your business.

The customer shows up at your old location. Calls a disconnected number. Gets frustrated and goes to the competitor AI described correctly.

3. It's Recommending Your Competitor Instead

Here's where it gets personal. When someone asks "best [your service] in [your city]," AI gives a confident answer. And it's not you.

It's not because your competitor is better. It's because their online presence is more structured, more consistent, and easier for AI to understand. They might have better schema markup on their website, more consistent business listings, or simply more content that AI can parse.

The playing field isn't level anymore. And most business owners don't even know the game has changed.

4. It Doesn't Know What Makes You Different

Even when AI knows your business exists and gets the basics right, it usually can't explain why someone should choose you. Your unique value — the thing that makes regulars come back, the reason people refer their friends — doesn't translate to AI.

That's because AI looks for structured signals: specific services, specialties, awards, certifications, review themes. If your website says "we provide excellent service" without specifics, AI has nothing to differentiate you from the 50 other businesses that say the same thing.

Your 25 years of experience, your family recipe, your same-day turnaround — those differentiators need to be explicit and structured, or AI treats you as generic.

5. Your Website Is Talking to Humans, Not Machines

You probably spent good money on a website that looks great and reads well. But here's the problem: AI doesn't read your website the way a person does.

It doesn't admire your photos or feel your brand voice. It scans for structured data — specific code that tells it your business name, location, services, hours, and reviews in a format it can understand.

Most small business websites don't have this. They look great to customers but are essentially invisible to AI. It's like having a beautiful storefront on a street with no signs — humans who walk by love it, but nobody driving by knows it's there.

The good news? Adding structured data is fixable. And it doesn't require redesigning your whole site.
